Label Plants in Garden
Harvest Lettuce
Eat Lettuce
Objectives:

  • Become more familiar with vegetables we are growing
  • Experience harvesting - the final step in growing vegetables
  • Experience eating a vegetable started from seed

MATERIALS

FOR ACTIVITY:
  • Laminated plant labels (see lesson #13)
  • Paper plates and forks (one per student)
  • Scissors
  • Large bowl for collecting lettuce and making salad
  • Plastic salad servers
  • Salad dressing - vinaigrette made with vegetable oil - Cooking Terms and Techniques info

LABEL PLANTS
Review why we need to label our plants
Gardeners, and especially farmers, use plant labels to remember what they planted where.Distribute
labels info and invite students to stick them into the ground in the appropriate places around the garden.

HARVEST LETTUCE

info Demonstrate how to harvest lettuce and invite the students to harvest the lettuce and place in large bowl.

CLOSING ACTIVITY

Come together in a circle. Distribute plates and forks. Add dressing to the lettuce in the bowl.
Mix the salad and serve. Celebrate the program by sharing the "FRUITS OF OUR LABOR"
